The Magogs Ceilidh Band, with its driving music and dynamic callers, will have you and your guests dancing and laughing. Indeed, our main aims are that our ceilidhs should be inclusive and FUN!
We have played at weddings, birthdays, corporate events, anniversaries, Burns' nights, academic conferences, street parties, village feasts, international summer schools and town twinnings. Whether the dancers are inexperienced or experienced, young or old, or in-between, we have dances for everyone.
Our typical line-up is fiddle, button accordion, guitar/piano and bodhrán (the Irish drum). Though the core of our repertoire is Celtic, drawing mostly from Ireland and Scotland, we also perform music from America, Finland, Israel, and the Balkans. Our experienced callers use dances from England, Scotland, Ireland, and France—some are even home grown!
We are based in Cambridge and most of our gigs are there or thereabouts. However we do venture further afield, and have played in London, the Midlands, the Netherlands and Bulgaria.
If you prefer a musical backdrop rather than a dance, you can book just the musicians. We can provide anything from relaxing waltzes and hornpipes to a full-on, dynamic trad folk session (this is where the musicians honed their skills). We've also done some very successful sing alongs where we've helped to curate the song lists.
Our equipment is top notch, insured and PAT tested. We are recommended by some lovely venues such as Longstowe Hall, South Farm and the Garden Barn. We are happy to help with venue choice, as we have played most of them! We have long standing relationships with many of the Cambridge Colleges. Please take a look at our venues list to see some of the other places at which we have played.
We do get booked up well in advance (especially Summer Saturdays, Christmas and Burn's nights), so don't delay and check our availability earlier rather than later.
